Since Portugal is part of the EU customs union, your move to Portugal is duty-free – your household goods cross the border without a customs declaration, though a detailed inventory list should still accompany the truck transport. For Madeira and the Azores we factor in sea freight from Lisbon or Leixões, which noticeably increases the cost and transit time compared with the mainland; for smaller volumes, groupage is the most economical solution here. On arrival you need a NIF number as tax identification and, for stays of more than three months, a registration certificate from your municipality – we build both into the schedule of your move.

Dedicated container (FCL)
Your household goods travel alone in a 20ft or 40ft container – the fastest option and the standard from roughly three rooms upwards.
Groupage / shared container (LCL)
You share a container and pay only for the cubic metres you use. Noticeably cheaper for smaller volumes, with a slightly longer transit.
Packing & furniture assembly
Export-grade packing by our own crew, dismantling and reassembly of furniture, plus fitted kitchens on request.
Interim storage in our own halls
If the moving-out and moving-in dates do not line up, we store your goods in our own warehouses in Osnabrück – by the day or by the month.
EU formalities & registration
No customs declaration within the EU. We prepare the inventory list for the transport and tell you which registrations are due on arrival.

Portugal has drawn Germans for years – retiring on the Algarve, starting over professionally in Lisbon or Porto, or setting up a second home on the Atlantic. Koch Umzugslogistik organises your move to Portugal from start to finish: packing in Germany, transport by truck or sea freight, and setup at the destination by our Portuguese partners.
To the mainland – Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Cascais – we transport by truck in 4–6 days. For Madeira and the Azores we use sea freight from Lisbon or Leixões, where groupage pays off considerably for smaller volumes. As an EU country, Portugal requires no customs declaration for household goods. You will, however, need a NIF number for practically every dealing with the authorities – we tell you in good time what to apply for and when.

FAQ: Relocation to Portugal
How long does a move to Portugal take?
By truck to the Portuguese mainland (Lisbon, Porto, Algarve), transport takes 4–6 days. For Madeira, add around 5–8 days of sea freight, for the Azores 7–12 days. From packing to setup, plan for 1.5–3 weeks in total.
What does a move to Portugal cost?
For a three-room apartment to the mainland, expect around EUR 3,800–6,400; to Madeira around EUR 5,500–9,000. The price depends on volume, destination and transport route. For smaller volumes, groupage lowers the cost considerably.
Do I need a customs declaration for a move to Portugal?
As an EU citizen you do not need a customs declaration for household goods. A detailed inventory list should still accompany the transport. On arrival you need a NIF number (tax number) and – for stays over three months – a registration certificate from your municipality. We advise you on all the formalities.
